It's told by Phillip Ashley, an orphan brought up by his older cousin Ambrose Ashley, as his heir. Even though three of our regulars were on Burn's Night duties elsewhere, twelve met to talk about our January choice Daphne Du Maurier's My Cousin Rachel. My Cousin Rachel is my third Daphne du Maurier, and the first I've read told from a masculine perspective. We WornOut ladies have been having a bit of a chat amongst ourselves about denim shirts. My Cousin Rachel's opening, with a dead body swinging on a gibbet, reminded me somewhat of Great Expectations. At first the letters are jovial and full of travel foibles and memorable sights. That the narrator is also an orphan called Philip cemented the connection. Phillip's uncle, Ambrose, leaves for a trip to the continent. With the result that both my fashion cousin, Rachel WornOut, and I are coincidentally both wearing them today. I have owned My Cousin Rachel for almost five years now, and I cannot imagine why I took so long to read it. I decided to read My Cousin Rachel entirely on a whim, and also because Natalie at Coffee and a Book Chick told me to. Based on the novel by Daphne du Maurier, "My cousin Rachel" (1952) was directed by Henry Koster and stars Olivia de Havilland and Richard Burton. I was told to read this by a woman working in Waterstones after she saw that I was buying Rebecca by the same author.
